Gone are the days where women are encouraged to ‘take it easy’ during pregnancy. Modern guidance has emphasised the importance of regular exercise and physical activity, both during pregnancy to aid labour and in the post natal stages when recovering from labour. Our Level 3 Ante and Post Natal Exercise Instructor course is designed to equip fitness professionals with the skills and knowledge to help mothers exercise safely and effectively during this period in their lives.

WHAT YOU GET

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course is aimed anyone looking to offer tailored fitness programmes through exercise referral. The minimal entry requirement is our Level 2 Fitness Instructor Course, but ideally you will have completed our Level 3 Personal Trainer Course.

Learning Outcomes

As an Ante and Post Natal Exercise Instructor, you will enable you to support mothers to safely exercise during pregnancy and after birth. You will gain the skills, knowledge and competence required in order to work with ante and post natal clients in an unsupervised manner. Topics include:

Considering Safe & Effective Exercise

You will develop an understanding of the underpinning biomechanical, physiological and anatomical changes that occur during and after pregnancy, enabling you to prescribe safe and effective exercise.

Understand the benefits of exercise for this group of women

You’ll be able to identify the benefits of exercise for each stage including the trimesters, labour, childbirth and post-natal.

Understand how to support ante natal and post natal clients exercise

You’ll be able to develop an effective working relationship with ante or post natal clients, helping them to overcome any real or perceived barriers to exercise they may have.

Contraindications to Exercise

You’ll learn the relative absolute contraindications to exercise for ante natal and post natal clients. You’ll also know which exercises to avoid for each trimester and for post natal clients. 

Managing Risks During Exercise

On top of contraindications, you’ll be able to identify risks, spot warning signs that indicate a client should stop exercising and how to respond to any warning signs. 

Nutrition

You’ll be able to describe the important of a balancing diets for ante natal and post natal clients, including sources of food which are important, foods which should be avoided and explain why they should be avoided.

Programme design for ante natal and post natal clients

You’ll gain enhanced skills in screening, planning and adapting exercise for ante natal and post natal clients. You’ll be able to analyse data to plan your programmes effectively. You will be able to tailor your sessions so that they’re appropriate to the needs of your client and their stage of pregnancy or post natal recovery.

How You'll be Assessed

The course assessments consists of a multiple choice theory paper, a short-answer worksheet submission, a theoretical case study and programming for your case study.

Course Structure

Recommended study time:

  • 40 hours total qualification time

This course is delivered using a blended learning model. This involves a period of home study – where you will be supported by a tutor where required –  with our course manuals before attending a two-day practical workshop in small groups. You will then return for an assessment day with your worksheet and case study two weeks later. With this approach, students usually qualify within 4-6 weeks.

Employment Opportunities

Many opportunities open up to you with this qualification. As a qualified Ante Natal and Post Natal Exercise Instructor, you will be able to help women on a 1:1 basis, adapt exercise for them in a group exercise setting, or even run your own specialist mother and baby fitness classes.

With the Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma, you’ll be fully qualified to work alongside medical professionals and organisations, like the NHS, who will refer clients to you.

Meet Your Post Natal Fitness Course Tutor

Our resident movement and treatment expert, Paul has been with T2 since 2012. He was a full time PT and class instructor for his first 7 years in the fitness industry. He now spends most of his time teaching and presenting across the UK and abroad. His areas of expertise are movement assessment, anatomy and training for optimal movement quality.
